Proper dental care is essential for people with diabetes because they are particularly susceptible to gum disease. It is important to understand that gum disease in turn aggravates diabetes. One study showed that people with diabetes who had regular dental visits significantly lowered their medical costs (See link below).
Diligent home care is also required. We recommend our two DioxiCare® powerhouse oral care products: DioxiRinse Mouthwash and DioxiBrite Toothpaste. Both kill almost all oral bacteria and remove biofilm, keeping mouth and gums clean.
Gum disease begins with the accumulation of plaque, a biofilm made up mostly of bacteria. High blood sugar associated with diabetes contributes to bacterial growth. Plaque can harden into tartar, a trap for further plaque accumulation. Once tartar starts forming, only a dental professional can remove it. Good dental habits can prevent this accumulation.
Plaque produces toxins that irritate and inflame the gum tissue (gingivitis). Long-term inflammation may lead to periodontitis: pockets between the teeth and gums, bone loss, and possible tooth loss.
Proper home care includes brushing teeth, rinsing, using a proxy brush between teeth, oral irrigation, and flossing. Don’t forget to brush the back of your teeth where plaque accumulates. Most dentists recommend brushing your teeth for a minimum of two minutes.
Many of our customers dip their floss picks and proxy brushes into DioxiRinse for disinfection between teeth. Also a good idea is adding DioxiRinse to your oral irrigator (see instructions on DioxiRinse package). Lastly, gargle with DioxiRinse twice a day, rinsing the back of the throat and tongue where harmful bacteria and biofilm accumulate. This home care routine is not overly time consuming and benefits to oral health are well worth the effort, even if you don’t have diabetes.
Attention to users of chlorhexidine gluconate (Peridex) and Listerine. Please see our chart comparing the advantages of DioxiRinse to those more familiar products. For example, DioxiRinse kills all gram negative bacteria, tastes good, does not stain teeth and reduces bad breath by oxidation.

Bad breath or halitosis affects about one half the world's population. Nearly all mouth odor is developed within the mouth and not originally from the lungs or stomach, except, of course, if garlic or onion is recently eaten. The root cause is mostly gram negative bacteria growing between the teeth and on the back of tongue. When not removed, bacteria build-up gives us gingivitis, periodontitis and biofilm, and, of course -- odor. One good method to avoid these conditions is daily rinsing and gargling with a bacteria killing mouthwash such as DioxiRinse. The importance of this special rinse is that it removes the foul odor as well as bacteria. A bad odor is often a sign of periodontal disease, and sometimes other systemic diseases.
Characterizing odor is difficult, and is best measured by a special gas testing instrument known as a gas chromatograph (OralChroma, FIS Corp, Ontario). Development of this device, now portable, places odor removal detection in the realm of science rather than "art."
Bad mouth odor is made up of 3 gases, hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor), methyl mercaptan, and methyl sulfide. These unpleasant smells are oxidized easily by active chlorine dioxide found in DioxiRinse Mouthwash. When testing breath with a chromatograph instrument, small amounts of air are withdrawn from your mouth and injected into a small opening in the device. In a few minutes the gas output concentration is read on a meter. The machine used here gives us the results of a 30 second mouth rinsing with DioxiRinse from a patient with bad breath.

Seasonal influenza (Type A flu) thrives in the soft palate of the mouth, according to a recent article published in Nature, the International Weekly Journal of Science. (See link below.) The soft palate is the tissue in the roof of the mouth, near the nasal cavity. Inflammation in the mucus-coated soft palate triggers coughs and sneezes, transmitting the virus to other people and creating public health threats, says the study. The soft palate was never considered before as a home for flu virus. The discovery is based on animal studies using ferrets, yes ferrets! Ferrets and humans have similar biochemistry in the soft palate, according to the authors.

We recommend gargling with DioxiRinse to relieve sore throat associated with flu and colds, although the Rinse is best known as the go to mouthwash for gingivitis and bad breath.
The following is a more detailed procedure for using DioxiRinse Mouthwash for sore throats.
Gargle the solution so it washes the soft palate and the nasopharynx in the back of the throat. Many doctors recommend gargling with salt water. DioxiRinse gargling does everything salt water does and more, such as: killing virus and providing immediate soothing effect. DioxiRinse tastes good. Chlorine dioxide in DioxiRinse is thought to neutralize inflammatory compounds such as oxygen free-radicals and interleukin 8, a natural protein, both of which cause pain and irritation.
At the onset of sore throat and flu symptoms, gargle with DioxiRinse a few times, about 15 seconds each time. Tilt your head back so the solution coats the back of the throat. Maneuver some liquid to the entrance of the nasal cavity, sometimes called the nasopharynx. After expelling the mouthwash, another way to reach the infected area is by using the remaining solution in the throat and applying a snoring action, forcing liquid into the back of the nose.
A slight burning or tingling usually indicates that you’ve “reached the right spot.” If necessary, repeat the procedure later during the day, or before sleeping. It is not necessary to rinse your mouth with tap water after the procedure.
Well past the initial stages of flu or bronchitis, the disease may be too internalized for achieving good reduction of irritation. But otherwise the relief of pain is fast and noticeable. Don’t forget your flu shot well in advance of peak flu season. Also, using a humidifier will ease nasal congestion and help soothe your sore throat.
